This is definitely interesting times for the tobacco industry. I must say that whilst I have my own reservations about the product, I do admire the industry. The legal tobacco business, in my humble view, remains the most important stakeholder to making sure that there is sanity in the industry.

The U.S. Surgeon General recently issued a report titled "Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults," which calls for urgent action to protect children from the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry.

The Association of International Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL) bestowed its Product of the Year Award on Unifoil Corp., Fairfield, New Jersey, for a series of cartons for Camel Menthol, Camel Bold and Camel Crush cigarettes from RJR Tobacco, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

A campus-wide smoking ban infringes on our civil rights and possibly our constitutional rights. Recently, the Academic Senate decided that Cal State Fullerton would be a smoke-free campus beginning Aug. 1, 2013.

In the 1970s it seemed like we had problems we could never fix - and I'm not talking about white polyester disco suits and the band Air Supply. The '70s presented America with the residue of a catastrophic war, soaring inner-city crime rates, runaway inflation and subjugation to Middle East oil. To punctuate the dismal vibe, everybody smoked, or so it seemed if you were sitting on an airplane at the edge of the DMZ between the smoking and nonsmoking sections, gagging and hacking as the guy a foot away from you chain-smoked filterless Camels.
